Banjo Clock The banjo clock is one of my favorites. Somewhat whimsical in design, the banjo clock is an American wall clock with a banjo-shaped case.
The banjo clock was invented by Simon Willard and patented in 1802. The banjo clock is so named because the shape is similar to the banjo musical instrument. It normally lacks a striking mechanism, and indicates time only by its hands and dial.
The banjo clock style was widely copied by other clockmakers. Variants of the banjo-style clock made by others include examples with square or diamond-shaped dials, and the extremely opulent, heavily gilt "girandole" style. Original 19th century banjo clocks are highly prized by collectors, and look absolutely beautiful gracing a wall. |
