Cuckoo Clocks
Perhaps everyone's favorite, antique cuckoo clocks were engineering excellence in a time of hand-crafted wood making. The clock movements that were required to make the cuckoo work were if you consider what was involved. Prices for cuckoo clocks vary greatly, depending on quality, style, brand, and materials.
A German invention in 1730, cuckoo clocks became very popular in the third quarter of the 19th century. Cuckoo clocks were wommonly weight driven and in the form of wall clocks, although some may be found as spring driven shelf clocks. Most of the early cuckoo clock were made in the Black Forest area of Germany. There were also some cuckoo clocks made in the US in the late 1800's and early 1900's such as the Lux company, and the Philadelphia based American Cuckoo Clock Company.
Cuckoo clocks are still made today, some with traditionally carved wooden cases and weight driven movements, but many are reproductions with molded plastic cases and quartz movements.
