Seth Thomas Clocks
Seth Thomas is probably the most well known and respected clock maker in the United States even today. Seth Thomas is one of the most famous American clockmakers. It is also one of the oldest - they describe themselves as "America's Oldest Clockmaker". The company was founded almost 200 years ago in 1813 and is still going strong.
Prior to Thomas' mass-production factories, he became well known for his elaborate Grandfather Clocks, as well as some very large tower clocks, including the Seth Thomas Clock Tower at New York's Grand Central Terminal.
Improvements in the field of horology and timekeeping in general led them to introduce spring-driven clocks during the 1850s. A raft of new Seth Thomas clocks was introduced after this as clocks became more affordable and more reliable. Clocks were seen as being the next adornment to homes and the Seth Thomas Clock Co was perfectly positioned to take advantage of this.
